Feast of St. Andrew the Apostle

St. Andrew was a native of Bethsaida in Galilee, a fisherman bytrade, and a former disciple of John the Baptist. He was the one who introduced his brother Peter to Jesus, saying, “We have found the Messiah.” Overshadowed henceforth by his brother, Andrew nevertheless appears again in the Gospels as introducing souls to Christ. After Pentecost, Andrew took up the apostolate on amuch wider scale, and is said to have been martyred at Patras insouthern Greece on a cross which was in the form of an “X”. This type of cross has long been known as “St. Andrew’s cross.”

PRAYER:
Lord, in your kindness hear our petitions. You called Andrew the apostle to preach the gospel and guide your Church in faith. May he always be our friend in your presence tohelp us with his prayers. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit. Amen.ADVEN

Advent

The Christmas Season begins with a period of preparation called Advent, from the Latin word that means “coming” — the coming of the promised Redeemer. Besides reminding us of Christ’s first coming at Bethlehem, Advent prepares us for His coming by grace at Christmas and His final coming at the end of the world. Advent is an especially lovely season and we can make great use of it. With the beginning of the season of Advent, we begin a new liturgical year. The First Sunday of Advent is therefore the Church’s “New Year’s Day”. Advent begins the Christmas cycle. Advent means that the Lord is coming. Jesus Christ, our brother in humanity and our God in His divinity is about to arrive. But He comes to us in different ways. First, Jesus came to us at a specific point in history at Bethlehem about 2000 years ago. But in this great feast He mystically comes again. Second, the Lord, Alpha and Omega, will come to judge the living and the dead in the Second coming. Third, the Redeemer comes to us in grace. He speaks to us in our conscience and comes to us in the Eucharist and in the Word of God proclaimed. He arrives in the person of the beggar, the suffering, the oppressed. We must be ready to receive and welcome Him when He comes!

Thanksgiving Prayer

Father in Heaven, Creator of all and source of all goodness and love, please look kindly upon us and receive our heartfelt gratitude in this time of giving thanks.

Thank you for all the graces and blessings. You have betowed upon us, spiritual and temporal: our faith and religious heritage. Our food and shelter, our health, the loves we have for one another, our family and friends.

Dear Father, in Your infinite generosity, please grant us continued graces and blessing throughout the coming year.

This we ask in the Name of Jesus, Your Son and our Brother. Amen

Blessed Miguel Augustin Pro

Blessed Miguel is a 20th century Mexican martyr, a Jesuit who ministered (undercover) to Catholics after decrees of the atheist government closed churches and exiled priests. A master of disguise, Pro continued his ministry for several years under the very noses of the police, taking on the roles of peasant, sophisticated man about town, or plain clothes detective to make his way from one secret house church to another. He was falsely accused of partaking in a plot to assassinate the president, and executed without trial in 1927. His last words were Viva Cristo Rey! Long Live Christ the King!

Prayer for the Dead

O merciful God, take pity on those souls who have no particular friends and intercessors to recommend them to Thee, who, either through the negligence of those who are alive, or through length of time are forgotten by their friends and by all. Spare them, O Lord, and remember Thine own mercy, when others forget to appeal to it. Let not the souls which Thou hast created be parted from thee, their Creator. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen
