Ash Wednesday
"Oh Man, remeber that you are dust and to dust you shall return."
At the beginning of Lent, on Ash Wednesday, ashes are blessed during Mass, after the homily. The blessed ashes are then "imposed" on the faithful as a sign of conversion, penance, fasting and human mortality.

LENT—That wonderful time of the year!
This may seem to be a strange title, but the Church does teach that Lent is a blessed and happy time of the Church's liturgical year. The strangeness comes from a misunderstanding of the season. It is not one of drudgery and suffering. Instead, it is to be viewed as a great renewal! We look interiorly and clean out all that weighs us down. All the negative influences in our lives are reassessed. Through these forty days we refresh ourselves. In this way we properly prepare for the great celebration of Easter. Just as Jesus rose from the cold tomb to a resurrected life, so we throw off the coldness of sin and negativity to a life renewed in the Spirit. What could be more wonderful?
